Forum: Drilling's effects on jobs and community

The Unitarian Universalist Church in Athens, PA (next to Sayre), is having its third session of a 3-part public forum on gas drilling. The topic is drilling’s effect on jobs and local community. Speaker will be Tony Ventello, Exec. Dir. of Central Bradford Authority.

Directions: Take exit 60 from Rte. 17/86 and go south on 220 for 2 miles. Follow signs into Athens which puts you onto Pine Street. Go several blocks and turn right at light onto Main Street. Go several more blocks, down a hill, and turn right onto North Street. Church is at 112 North Street on right side.

With growing evidence that the drilling can damage water supplies, Democratic leaders in Congress are circulating legislation that would repeal the extraordinary exemption and for the first time require companies to disclose all chemicals used in the key drilling process, called hydraulic fracturing.

This event is sponsored by BRSC (Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition) with co-sponsors Shaleshock and Citizen’s Energy Alliance. Line-up includes Theo Colborn calling in, Ron Gula from PA (a farmer who delivers warnings about leasing/contaminations from personal experience), and a rep from Shaleshock. FREE admission.

Environmental organizations have been forced to play catch up; to educate the public about a drilling process that has not been widely used in this part of the country; and to argue against drilling, at a time of unparalleled economic distress and budget shortfalls, in what may be the largest natural gas reservoir in the nation. And they’re also up against the oil and gas companies. “We’ve never seen the circus come to town before,” says Bruce Ferguson, a member of Catskill Citizens for Safe Energy who lives in Sullivan County.

6:30 pm – cookout – bring your own food and some to share – wood for the fire will be provided.

9 pm – music and campfire

Overnight Campout – Spend the night under the stars– bring your tent and sleeping bag—campsite rentals are $19, up to seven people at each site. Be sure to bring a few dollars if you plan to camp.
