Shaleshock 101 – Hydro-Fracking in the Marcellus Shale

Dates/ Times: Thursdays July 22, July 29, Aug. 12, Aug. 19, Aug. 26 6pm-7:30pm

Shaleshock 101 is a comprehensive curriculum that covers everything from the basics of Gas Drilling to movement building and strategy. Over the course of five class sessions we’ll cover a broad spectrum of relevant topics. This class is based on a curriculum that began last year to expand the knowledge and capacity of participants to engage in a movement to protect our communities from exploitative drilling. The curriculum we use evolves and changes as it’s updated, fact-checked, and to meet the needs of participants.

The curriculum is divided into 12 parts with various topics. We split these into sessions and will assign homework for those of you that want to practice your research skills.

We want participants to attend all sessions. If you need to be flexible, please talk to us about it and perhaps we can make arrangements.

Session #1: (7/22) Introductions, The Drilling Process in Depth, Fracking in Context, Regulations (DEC and otherwise)

Session #2: (7/29) Leases and Landowner Rights, Mapping leases/wells/potential wells in  your area, Health Risks & Effects, Environmental Risks & Effects

Session #3: (8/12) Tools for Starting a Group, Media & “Green” Washing, Understanding Gas Industry Lingo.

Session #4: (8/19) Corporate Research, Tools for movement Strategy, water quality tests
