Concerned Citizens of NEPA are producing an environmental rally that will raise awareness on the Marcellus Shale situation occurring in Northeast Pennsylvania. A Gas Stock Rally Festival- Rally–Concert will take place on Saturday Aug 21, 2010 at the Luzerne County Fairgrounds located State Route 118 in Lehman, Pennsylvania from Noon to 7:00 PM
The GAS STOCK Festival- Rally- Concert event will feature a number of superb storytellers on environmental and family-oriented entertainers, Environmental vendors and exhibits, environmental education displays. There will also be a vigil with a song circle where audience participation is the focus.
Gas Stock Festival – Rally- Concert is the inspiration of Northeast Pennsylvania Citizens in Action Group in partnership with members of local environmental groups and activists who make up part of the concerned citizens in NEPA. It is their desire to keep air, water and rivers clean that are now at risk of being contaminated by the Marcellus Shale Drilling.
We are engaging everyone that has been at the helm of leading the charge in educating residents and investigating the problems associated with the drilling and it’s after effects. It is the group’s intent to help raise awareness and create unified voice to this very serious Marcellus Shale and Fracking situation.
Northeastern Pennsylvania has recently become the epicenter and a symbol of American Drilling. This grassroots action will serve as one of Premier Rally Events on the health of our nation’s environmental challenges. It will also be the measuring stick that Local, State and Federal Representatives will look at to see how serious the environmental movement in NEPA is on the Marcellus Shale issue. The drilling companies and special interest groups will also look at this event to see if there is strong opposition to their activities in Pennsylvania.
The event is not designed to raise revenue, but to gain support and ignite educational awareness that will help our area work toward environmental and social justice. It is through a small group of dedicated Citizens In Action members that money has been put up front to let the people of NEPA show their solidarity and strength as one united group. All money raised via the small charge for Vendor Space or any monies from sponsor involvement will go to offset the cost of the event. We have estimated the cost of this project to be $10.000. Those costs include venue rental, liability insurance, Security, First Aid, Sound Engineers, Advertising, Tee-shirts and other event needs. We will make all attempts to have items underwritten by sponsors or essential needs or services donated In kind.
This event will help our community to understand the environmental facts that are part of this topical drilling situation. We hope that this effort will become recognized for its leadership in helping to raise awareness and help develop landmark environmental laws on a state and federal level.
The GAS STOCK event will bring to light the possibilities of a clean future and the negative impact that drilling brings to our area, including the toxic chemicals placed in the air and water. We need to communicate and find positive solutions to situations in play that are already contaminated by the fracking process.
This GAS STOCK group effort needs to develop into a collective large movement of concerned groups and citizens working in tandem to protect our area from the dangers of current drilling. We envision a truly large coalition and a forceful movement that will grow and be active in our community for generations. The Drilling Situation is not going away anytime soon or with any ease. Now is the time to join together, teach our children and show the county we are not going to let corporate interests destroy our home. The need to develop a coalition effort that will work tirelessly and be devoted to the community to promoting the message of our collective environmental concerns is necessary.
We understand the dilemma our area is in regarding this issue. We want to see the success of the event as well as the forward motion of education and awareness become part of the fiber of our community. This is not something that can be done in a day. We will only be able to gauge our success over years of time.
Gas Stock would present a diverse program of musical and performance artists-all superb entertainers who inspire audiences to become involved in protecting our planet for future generations.
The important element of the Gas Stock Event is to give groups the opportunity to explain to the public, if we all work together, our efforts can heal and transform both NEPA and our country into a better place.
The focus is on the environment at this event is first priority but would not be limited to groups (non-profits, activist organizations, and community groups) that bring a broad range of grassroots issues—globalization, social justice, environmental concerns, human rights, universal health care, homelessness, racism, homophobia, poverty, animal rights, world peace, loss of civil liberties, prison reform, disability rights, hunger, freedom of speech, and reproductive rights— to the event audience in a comfortable and accessible way.
The Gas Stock Event will present a rich and diverse mix of performers, singer-songwriters and musicians, all representing traditional, contemporary, American Roots or international music styles with a large range of speakers and artists. We will have good local and regional media coverage and will reach out to national media for this endeavor.
Please consider becoming involved in beginning of a collective coalition movement on our NEPA environment. This situation is not going away. The sooner we all begin to work together, the stronger each of our groups and citizens will be.
