Ulysses Town Fracking Ban!

Neither the federal Environmental Protection Agency, nor the New York Department of Environmental Conservation has stepped forward to protect the people from the plundering of our resources, poisoning our water, crowding and damaging our roads, ruining our beautiful landscapes, threatening our agriculture and tourism caused by industrialized gas extraction.

Can our local government step in and fill the gap? Let’s find out. We propose that the Town Board of Ulysses, New York enact a total ban on the technique known as high-volume slick water, horizontal hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of methane gas.

Petition:

We, the undersigned, believe that the high-volume slickwater horizontal hydrofracking gas extraction technique threatens our water and air.

We believe that allowing this practice in our community will significantly endanger our health and well-being.
Hydrofracking is a heavily industrialized process that in surrounding states has severely snarled traffic and damaged local agriculture, hunting, fishing, tourism, roads, and community economies.

We urge the Town of Ulysses to ban slickwater horizontal hydrofracking.

Rally in Binghampton 9-13-10 before EPA hearing

The EPA conducts its final public hearing on hydraulic fracturing in Binghamton September13 and 15. Rallies both for and against gas drilling were held ahead of the hearings on the 13th. Drilling opponents outnumbered pro-gas people about 2 to 1. Representatives Hinchey and Arcuri spoke (but are missed in this video) followed by filmmaker Josh Fox (Gasland), Binghamton mayor Matt Ryan, Tompkins County legislator Martha Robertson, Sullivan County legislator David Sager, Ithaca Colege biologist Sandra Steingraber, Ulster County legislator Susan_Zimet, Toxics Targetting president Walter Hang, and Dimock, Pa., residents Julie and Craig Sautner, whose well remains contaminated by gas drilling operations. Wes Gillingham of Catskill Moutainkeepers introduces the speakers.

Weston Wilson, EPA Whistleblower, at CPNY Summit

Weston Wilson, the EPA whistle-blower featured in Josh Fox’s film “Gasland”, made a surprise visit to the Coalition to Protect New York (CPNY) summit in Binghamton, NY on June 19, 2010 and delivered the first keynote. When an EPA study concluding that hydraulic fracturing “poses little or no threat” to drinking water supplies was published in 2004, he was one of several EPA scientists who challenged the study’s methodology and questioned the impartiality of the expert panel that reviewed its findings. EPA Findings on Hydraulic Fracturing Deemed “Unsupportable”. Dick Cheney’s fingerprints were all over it. Wilson delves into the history with humor appropriate for such a deadly serious topic.

Julia Walsh, Final Keynote Speaker at CPNY Summit

Julia Walsh, project director of the Frack Action campaign, was the final keynote speaker at the Coalition to Protect New York (CPNY) summit June 19, 2010. She spoke about the recent actions at DEC regional headquarters around the state and how now is the time for direct action. She also spoke about what is important that unites us at the deepest level.
