Neighbors United For the Fingerlakes (NUFF) is a local, grassroots, non-profit organization committed to creating and sustaining public awareness of environmental threats to the Finger Lakes Region of New York State from CAFO’s, Gas Drilling, Inadequate Sewage Treatment and other Industries. We have a strong interest in water quality and the effects industrial use and disposal of water, have on both water quantity and quality.
CURRENT PROJECTS: NUFF has developed a course on fresh water ecology in tributaries to Cayuga Lake. The course teaches how to document observations of an ecosystem through: journaling;photography; sampling; recording of sampling results and publishing findings. Students learn how to use topographical maps to identify geological formations, and how those geological formations affect water movement.
NUFF has accumulated a library of resources on water quality, and government and community resources related to pollution issues and is committed to share these resources with community members who find themselves impacted by industrial land uses or who wish to become better informed.
IN THE WORKS: NUFF is committed to expand levels of water testing to compile a baseline of water quality in tributaries to Cayuga Lake, to record levels of current contaminants, and to monitor for changes in levels of and types of contaminants.
We are concerned about air quality around industrial sites including gas wells and drill sites, industrial agriculture complexes, sewage and manure handling facilities and other industrial sites within the Fingerlakes region. We’re also hoping to obtain air quality testing devices in order to respond to community concerns.
NUFF is working on a video project to document the history of CAFO’s.
GETTING INVOLVED: NUFF is seeking funding to pay for water and air sampling equipment and supplies. Funding is needed for certified lab testing of water samples. NUFF uses aerial photography to pinpoint sources of runoff. Funds and volunteers are needed to support these projects.
